As the price of Solid State Drives (SSDs) continue to decline, albeit slowly, you may start seeing these types of drives creep into the mainstream PC market.

What are SSDs?
SSDs perform the same basic function as a traditional hard drive (HDD) but use flash-based chips instead of traditional magnetic platters. SSDs and HDDs are where your operating system is installed and all of your pictures and music is stored.

What are the advantages?
SSDs are superior to traditional HDDs for a variety of reasons. The biggest and most talked about advantage in using an SSD instead of a HDD in your computer is the speed. SSDs are capable of transferring data at a much higher speed than HDDs. In fact, in some of the new computers that I’ve built for customers, Windows was able to load in under 15 seconds! According to ServerWatch.com, SSDs typically last two to three times longer than a mechanical HDD. Additionally, because there are no moving parts, power consumption is less and the sound you hear when your hard drive is working is eliminated. They make excellent candidates for laptops because of their resistance to drops, bumps, and g-force (think throwing your laptop on a sofa). Finally, SSDs produce much less heat than HDDs.

Should I get an SSD?
SSDs do have some disadvantages. First, you’ll have a hard time finding SSDs in off the shelf computer systems. If you do find one, or if you decide to do a custom build, you’ll notice that SSDs are much more expensive than HDDs (think ~$175-$200 for a 240GB SSD). Most of the time, I recommend that people get a SSD for their operating system and programs but store their music, photos, and videos on an external hard drive. This allows the user to have benefit from the speed of the SSD but still have ample space to store their files on the external (or internal) HDD.

Please call us today at 931-320-9820 if you’d like to build a new computer with an SSD. You won’t regret it!

I spend a lot of my time removing computer viruses and replacing defective hard drives. Of course, these two repairs are entirely different, but they sometimes do have a similar impact: data loss.

Data loss is, unfortunately, a reality in the digital age we all enjoy today. Most people don’t realize that the traditional hard drives in their computers usually only last five to seven years before mechanical failure occurs. Five to seven years seems like a long time, however, a lot of hard drives fail prematurely (this is especially true in laptops, at least in my experience). Viruses can be removed without loss of data, but sometimes data loss does occur.

No matter the cause of data loss, the effects are devastating for customers. Years of pictures, videos, music, and documents are lost. There are some instances where files can be recovered, but the price is astonishingly high and not affordable for most people.

Data loss can occur at any time and that is why it is important to always have your files backed up somewhere. There are several ways to back up your data, and I will briefly discuss a few of them here.

1. Burn files to DVD/Blu-ray
2. Copy important files to external hard drive
3. Copy important files to thumb drive
4. Online backup service

1. Burn files to DVD/Blu-ray

Burning files to DVD/Blu-ray is very simple to do but I don’t recommend it for a couple of reasons. First, it is very easy for the discs to get lost or damaged. Second, its not possible to maintain a continuous backup of new files – everything is done manually. You could potentially have dozens and dozens of discs laying around your home or office. No thanks!

2. Copy important files to external hard drive

There are many programs to choose from, both Mac and PC, that can automatically copy your files to an external hard drive. External hard drives come in a variety of capacities, which is always a good thing! However, people often forget that these hard drives will fail too. While it would almost be unheard of for your computer’s hard drive and your external hard drive to fail simultaneously, it could happen (power surge, flood, etc). Most people don’t use programs to automate their backup to an external hard dive. Instead, I find that a lot of people simply move their important pictures and files to an external hard drive for safekeeping. This method is fine until the external hard drive fails and you’ve lost your files.

3. Copy important files to thumb drive

There are three major drawbacks for backing files up to a thumb drive. First, thumb drives can be expensive. Second, thumb drives have a limited capacity. Finally, thumb drives can easily be lost or overwritten. This obviously isn’t an acceptable approach for backing up your files.

4. Online backup service

My recommendation for people wanting to back their files up is an online backup service. There are many choices available – but I am going to discuss the service that I use and enjoy.

I recommend Backblaze online backup service for a variety of reasons:

Data redundancy – Backblaze stores multiple copies of my files in case of drive failure.

Conviencence – Backblaze runs quietly in the background of my computer and continously backs up my files.

Everything – I don’t have to pick and choose what to back up – Backblaze backs up just about everything on my computer. It also backs up files on my external hard drives.

Unlimited – With Backblaze, I don’t have to worry about running out of space. There are no limits!

Affordable – Backblaze is only $5.00 a month and I no longer have to worry about data loss!

In my experience, people assume that if their laptop has any damage to it all that it’s not economical to repair. That couldn’t be further from the truth!

Most components of a laptop are repairable at reasonable prices – with the exception of a motherboard failure, which in most cases, is very expensive to repair/replace.

I spend a lot of time repairing broken screens, defective keyboards, and broken DC jacks. All of these repairs are very affordable and I always advise my customers to consider repair before replacing their laptop. Of course, if your laptop has several problems or is very old, it may make more sense to go ahead and buy yourself a new laptop!

Whether you decide to repair your laptop or replace it, Clarksville PC Repair can help. We can repair just about anything on a laptop and we offer up-front pricing so there aren’t any surprises! If you decide to replace, we can also access your hard drive and move your documents, pictures, and music to your new laptop. We also offer free laptop recycling and secure hard drive data destruction.

Also, please keep in mind that a lot of people just aren’t qualified to repair computers. Sure, your friend or relative may know a lot about computers, but that doesn’t mean they’re qualified to repair them. Bringing your computer to an unqualified technician is just asking for trouble later on.

Text of FBI Virus malware:

To unblock the computer, you must pay the fine through MoneyPak of $100.

***********************************************************************************

Please understand that the FBI Virus (Moneypak Virus or Green Dot Virus) is simply an intimidating scam that encourages its victims to pay $100 to restore functionality to their computer. Unfortunately, if the victim falls for this scam, they will have lost their $100 and have no way of recovering that money. Additionally, your computer will still be infected and be susceptible to new ransomware. Security Experts expect scammers to continue to develop more sophisticated and intimidating ransomware in the future.
